The Show Jumping

23 horses and riders Show Jumped on Sunday afternoon at 1:30 PM. from the original 35 who started Cross Country - approximately 66 %. (Nina Fout did not start 3 Magic Beans at all and Nicky Turner (AUS) withdrew Warrie Hill after Dressage.

Phillip Dutton jumped Mr. Bruce Duchessois' Hannigan, who stood 5th after Cross Country, in the third slot, as he had three to ride. They had one rail for 4 faults and a final score of 59.2.

Phillip rode Mrs. Annie Joines' The Foreman, who was in a tie for 3rd after Cross Country, in the 13th slot. That pair also had one rail for 4 faults and a final scoreof 55.2, which was good for 2nd place. (Phillip and The Foreman are pictured at the right at "The Keeneland Fence.")

Phillip Dutton standing in a tie for 3rd place with Shannon Stimson's Nova Top, jumped in the 3rd to last slot. Nova Top pulled two rails for 8 faults to drop him into a tie with Hannigan for 4th place on 54.2. The tie was broken by which horse had the Cross Country time closest to the Optimum Time.

Great Britain's Athens Olympic Individual Gold Medal winner Leslie Law jumped Coup de Coeur in the penultimate slot. They had one rail down for 4 faults plus1 time fault for a final score of 55.4 and a drop to 3rd place behind Phillip Dutton and The Foreman. (Leslie and Coup de Coeur are pictured at the left at one of the "Calumet Farm Fences."

The final horse to jump was Linda Wachtmeister' Winsome Adante, who had led throughout the competition. In true championship form, Kim and Winsome Adante jumped a double clear in the Show jumping to finish on their Dressage score of 38.2. (Kim and Winsome Adante are pictured at the right below at "The Rolex Fence.")

Kim became the second person in the history of the Kentucky event to win back to back competitions. Bruce Davidson, now being called "The King of Kentucky", a approbation started by The Chronicle of the Horse, performed this feat in 1988 and 1999 with Dr. Peaches.

Kim and "Dan" now have won the Rolex-Kentucky CCI**** three times (2002, 2004 and 2005). This accomplishment only has been equalled once, also by Bruce Davidson and Dr. Peaches who won in 1984, 1988 and 1999.

Kim also won the CCI***, in 1999, with Over The Limit, making this Kim's fourth win at the Kentucky Horse Park. (Rolex ran both a CCI**** and a CCI*** for the first two years of the Four Star. After 1999, the Three Star moved to Foxhall Farm, in Georgia.) Bruce also won at Kentucky four times - the three with Dr. Peaches and 1983 with J.J Babu - all were Three Stars..

eventingetc suggests, with apologies to The Chronicle of the Horse, that Kim should be now called "The Queen of Kentucky!"

Leslie Law (GBR), who placed third, did not come to the final Press Conference because he was catching a plane from Cincinnatti to London late Sunday afternoon. He did send the following message:

"Kim may be the Silver Medalist; but, she was Pure Gold today!"

Phillip Dutton, who finished 2nd, 4th and 5th, said, "We weren't on the same page today. She was in a class of her own!"

Kim said, "I was thinking about it all morning - that some stupid thing would happen, like I would fall off or miss a fence. I don't think it was until I turned to the last two oxers that I took a deep breath."

"For me competing is sort of like eating - it's a necessity. It makes my world go 'round."

After Kim and Winsome Adante passed through the finishing flags, Kim waved her hand in the air and began an impromptu Victory Gallop. She said, "That's actually the first time I've ever done that. He was just about perfect this weekend! He's a pretty amazing horse!"

Kim Severson and Winsome Adante made history today. Those of us who were present were fortunate and will remember this pair's perfection for the rest of our lives!

The Trot Up

24 horses trotted up on Sunday morning at 8:30 AM.

Rebecca Howard's Big Wave Dave, who finished Cross Country in 10th place, and Laine Ashker's Eight Saint James Place, who finished Cross Country in 26th place, were not presented.

Two horses were sent to Holding - Cathy Wieschhoff's Ocotillo and Ralph Hill's Bad Boy Billy, who was presented by Buck Davidson because Ralph broke an ankel in his fall at Craftsman's Corners, Fences 17ab, yesterday.

Ralph was riding this morning and hoping to be able to Show Jump this afternoon. His owner, Rebecca Broussard, suggested thet he not do it as it might displace the fracture and Ralph complied. Ralph has ridden at every Rolex Kentucky competition since he first rode here at the World Championships, in 1978.
