Karen Donckers, Gazelle de la Brasserie - 58.40 (13.20 time XC) Zara
Phillips (GBR), daughter of the American Coach Mark Phillips an Princess Anne,
the Princess Royal said, "I had a great ride inside the time inside the time.
It was a fantastic course which tested us all the way to the end. It will be amazing
for us to jumping the big arena tomorrow. None of us have ever been in an arena
like that. The going was fantastic. Some of the corners were a little bit slippery. As
to dicey moments, Zara said, "Mine would have been at the water - he crawled
over the boat." Her father added, not in Zara's presence, "She was lucky
at the water. She knew that she did not have time to go the long way at the last
water and she did that very well." Bettina
Hoy, standing second, who lives at Gatcombe, the Princes Royal's estate with her
huspand Andrew Hoy, and who coach Zara said,"We clmpete against the course.
Who ever wins tomorrow will be a worthy World Champion." As
to what befell the Americans:
Amy
Tryon and Poggio II, in 7th place, lead the third place American team on a double
clear. (Amy and Poggio II are pictured landing in the first water. Notice Poggio
looking for the next fence.) Kim
Severson and Winsome Adante had a run out at Fence 4-5, the Double Brushes and
picked up 6.8 time faults for 16th place. Will
Faudree and Antigua incurred 8.4 time faults for a score of 71.70 and 20th place. Heidi
White and Northern Spy were charged with a refusal at a skinny which she had never
had any intention of jumping. Mark Phillips, the Team Coach, talked to the Technical
Delegate, Tom Ryckewaert, who viewed the video tape and the TD agreed with Mark
and Heidi's interpretation of events and took the disobedience off the score sheet.
Heidi had 30.80 time faults. Karen
O'Connor, who rode as an individual, and Upstage had 60 jumping (for two glance
offs) and 45 time faults for a total of 119.80 for 44th place. Jan
Byyny, who rode as an individual, on Task Force, had 40 jumping faults and 46
time for a total of 120.50 and 45th place. Members
of the US Team said that when they walked the course they knew there would be
glance offs when the horses didn't even know they were supposed to jump the fence.
(Kim said that this had happened with Winsome Adante when he had his run out.) Among
other world class rider who had run outs over Rudiger Schwarz' course were, William
Fox-Pitt (GBR) with Tamarillo; Andrew Nicholson (NZL) on Lord Killinghurst; Andreas
Dibowski (GER) with FRH Serve Well; Ingrid Klimke (GER) riding Sleep Late; and
Andrew Hoy (AUS) who rode Master Monarch. The
Show Jumping begins at 2:00 PM, local Aachen time, on Sunday afternoon.
